These images grew out of a desire to isolate and elevate the iconic status of ordinary subjects by making careful photographic choices. I met average hobbyists, sportsmen, and athletes who approached their practiced struggles with profound skill and seriousness, something which I hoped to capture in the images even though no action beyond acknowledging the camera is presented.

This project worked as a way for me to form a more complete picture of my community as well as present a portrait of a place through those who occupy it. I tried to avoid the preconceived and often bias definitions of my neighborhood by making photographs based upon my own perception, one which grew into respect and appreciation during the project.

Each image in this continuing series captures a piece of a story which can be extended upon through careful examination. The images can be used together to form multiple narratives and also come to conclusions about our culture. They also work as an exploration into my own photographic process and interest in particular subject matter.
